Alpen Optics and Football with John Phillips, Jr.
Football stadiums are growing. Colleges receive huge amounts of money from football games, so stadiums are being built to hold increasing numbers of people who have to sit further from the action and higher in the sky. I went to a football game at the University of Alabama in mid-October. We had great seats on the 30-yard line in the new upper deck. When we arrived at the stadium, the weatherman said we’d have rain. I’d borrowed my dad’s Alpen Apex binoculars, so I could enjoy the game more. I discovered that not only could I see the game better with the Alpen binoculars, but I made many-new friends, because everyone around me wanted to borrow my binoculars.
I enjoyed being able to watch the game unfold with my Alpen Apex binoculars, and I had a great time using the binoculars to watch the interaction and the emotion of the coaches on the sidelines. The coaches either reacted positively or negatively to every play. This year, the University of Alabama has hired Coach Nick Saban, who won a national championship at Louisiana State University (LSU), coached the Miami Dolphins and is the highest-paid college football coach in the nation. I watched Saban’s intensity on every play, saw him get angry when his team got a bad call and watched him celebrating when his team picked-up a first down or scored a touchdown. I also was able to see Saban line-up his substitutes to go into the game and watch the players coming out of the game. At all times, I knew who was playing and who was on the sidelines. There’s a jumbotron on each end of the field, but the jumbotron only shows the game as it’s being played. It’s difficult to clearly see the action on the sidelines or the reactions of the coaches and the players when the instant review is shown.
From my place in the upper deck, I was at least 200-yards away from the action. But, with my Apex binoculars, I was right on the sidelines with the coaches and the players. I could see the intensity in the quarterback’s eyes and the fingers of the linemen as they trembled just before the snap of the ball. My wife says she couldn’t have seen the game without the binoculars. The only problem associated with Alpen binoculars and football games is you take your wife or one of your buddies with you to the football game, you really have to carry two pairs of binoculars with you. Otherwise, you’ll be trading binoculars back and forth throughout the games and not get to see as much of the game as you will if you don’t have to share your binoculars. Having one pair of binoculars at a football game is like taking only one rain poncho. If it’s raining, you must either give your rain suit to your wife, and you get wet, or share it with your wife and both of you get half-wet. I strongly recommend buying two pairs of Alpen binoculars to use at sporting events to avoid only being able to use one set half as much.
Even when attending sporting events alone, taking two pairs of Alpen binoculars with you is still a great idea, because someone around you always will be trying to borrow yours. You also can trade ‘em. We had two pair of binoculars at the Alabama game, and we let someone use one pair of binoculars in exchange for our using one of his rain ponchos. He got to watch the game up close. My wife and I shared time with the other pair of binoculars and stayed dry. I don’t believe there ever has been a time I’ve gone to a football game that I haven’t needed two pairs of binoculars. I was glad my dad loaned me his Alpen Apex binoculars for this football game. If you’re going to an athletic event, and you want to really enjoy and participate in the game, take two pairs of Apex binoculars with you.
