The Great Race

My son, John, and I run marathons together. So far, we’ve run four marathons. The last one was held in Huntsville, Alabama. I’m 62-years old, and my son is 33. Actually, he runs the races and I run to different locations in a car to provide water and energy drinks to him as he passes different mile markers.

This past week, my daughter-in-law, Shanna, and I took my Alpen binoculars with us to the race in Huntsville. We’ve learned that by getting to a point in the race where we can see 1/4- to 1/2-mile away with my binoculars, we easily can spot my son in the pack in his bright yellow jersey.

Once we spot John with the binoculars, we can better determine his condition and prepare to have food, like Nutrigrain bars, water or a sports drink ready for him when he passes. We also can determine his time and let him know his progress in the race compared to other runners. With the binoculars, we can view the race and better prepare to aid John before he reaches the checkpoint. At track meets, cross-country races and marathon races, Alpen Binoculars can be a tremendous help, if you’re running support for friends or loved ones.

We also try to photograph John at each checkpoint, so we can have a photo record of his performance at each station and mile marker. By using the binoculars, we have plenty of time to prepare our cameras to take photos at the right distance and speed to make the best pictures possible as John passes.

Many times getting to the mile makers where we want to provide aid can be a problem. However, by having the binoculars in the car and being able to see the traffic ahead of us, and which streets are blocked off before we reach them, we can make better decisions about the route we should travel to get to the mile markers where John expects to meet us.

If your youngster, or in my case, your adult child participates in any type of sport, being able to see them up-close and personal while they’re competing is a real advantage. That’s the reason I always carry Alpen binoculars with me to track meets, marathon races, basketball and football games, and even my grandchildren’s dance recitals. If you have children or grandchildren who participate in sports or other activities, you’ll find many uses for these binoculars, and you’ll be glad you have them.
